pH and Solutions Lab

Acids, bases, pH and titration, with every beaker drawn to scale.

pH and Solutions Lab walks through acids and bases from first properties to titration. It starts with what acids and bases do and how to recognize them in formulas, then places everyday substances on the pH scale and shows how indicators such as litmus, phenolphthalein and universal indicator change color.

Then the numbers come in. Students find pH from hydrogen ion concentration, use pH plus pOH equals 14, tell strong from weak acids, understand a buffer and work through neutralization and titration. Strips, test tubes, beakers and burettes are drawn from the same numbers as the question.

What children practice

Levels

  1. Level 1: Properties of acids and bases
  2. Level 2: Acids, bases and formulas
  3. Level 3: The pH scale
  4. Level 4: Indicators
  5. Level 5: pH and concentration
  6. Level 6: Strong, weak and buffers
  7. Level 7: Neutralization and titration
  8. Level 8: Course mix

How it works

Best for: A good fit for grades 9 to 12 in a chemistry course, when pH is first met as a number and students need to link it with what is happening in the solution.

Tip for parents: Test a few household liquids with red cabbage juice or a store-bought indicator strip, using adult supervision, and ask your child to predict acid or base before each test.

Questions parents ask

Does it cover logarithms of concentration?

It keeps the numbers clean. Level 5 uses concentrations that are powers of ten, so pH can be found without a calculator.

How is titration taught?

Level 7 draws a burette and a flask and asks for volumes and concentrations in neutralization, using M1 V1 equals M2 V2 for one-to-one cases. Sulfuric acid is treated as giving two hydrogen ions.

What do students learn about buffers?

Level 6 teaches buffers as a recall idea: what a buffer does when a little acid or base is added. It does not ask for buffer calculations.

pH and Solutions Lab is free with a parent account. A parent adds a child profile, and the child's progress is saved.
