Talk and Listen
A listening game for little learners that never uses a microphone.
Talk and Listen is a listening and early language game for Pre-K through grade 2. Every prompt is shown in large text and can be heard with a speaker button that uses the device's built-in voice. Children answer by tapping pictures or sentences. A child starts with one step, such as tapping the red ball or the cat that is sleeping.
Over six levels the tasks grow: two-step directions, picking the sentence that tells about a picture, putting a short story in order, choosing kind words and polite choices, and answering who, what, where, when and why about a short paragraph. The game does not use the microphone or record a voice at any point.
What children practice
- Follow one-step and two-step spoken directions
- Pick the color, size or position named in a direction
- Choose the sentence that tells about a picture
- Put the pictures of a short story in order
- Choose kind words, take turns and ask for help
- Answer who, what, where, when and why about a short story
Levels
- One step: Pre-K
- Two steps: Kindergarten
- Words and pictures: K to 1st
- Story order: 1st
- Kind words: 1st to 2nd
- Story questions: 2nd
How it works
- Each prompt appears as large text with a speaker button, and a Hear it again button repeats it.
- Tapping is the only way to answer, and no voice is ever recorded.
- After a wrong tap the card dims and a hint appears, and after a second wrong tap the right card glows.
- Six levels run from Pre-K to grade 2 and open in order as the child answers correctly.
Best for: A good fit for Pre-K to grade 2 when a child is building listening skills, following directions and learning early story skills.
Tip for parents: After each round, invite your child to say the answer out loud in a full sentence, such as The cat is sleeping. That adds the speaking practice, since the game itself only asks for taps.
Questions parents ask
Does Talk and Listen record my child's voice?
No. The game never uses a microphone and never records or stores a voice. Children listen and tap. The speaker button only plays the game's own text aloud using the device's built-in voice.
Where should a preschooler start?
Level 1, One step, is made for Pre-K. Kindergarten children usually meet two-step directions next, and levels open in order as the child answers correctly, so a child reaches the right place naturally.
What does the kind words level cover?
Level 5 asks about polite words, kind choices, taking turns, asking for help, being a good listener and asking good questions, using short situations with a few answer choices. It is language and social practice, not an assessment.
