Fraction Pizza Shop
Fill pizza orders to learn halves, equivalent fractions and fraction operations.
In Fraction Pizza Shop the child runs the kitchen. A customer ticket asks for something like half pepperoni and a quarter olives. The child picks toppings from a tray, taps slices to build the order and then taps Serve to find out whether the pizza is exactly right. Fractions become portions you can see and count.
Orders start with halves and quarters, then grow to eighths and thirds, equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, adding and taking away, and fractions of fractions. Because the child decides how to fill the pizza, and sometimes how to cut it, the game asks for understanding instead of guessing among answer choices.
What children practice
- Show halves, quarters, thirds, sixths and eighths as parts of a pizza
- Match equivalent fractions such as 2/4 and 4/8
- Read mixed numbers like 1 1/2 and serve more than one pizza
- Add and subtract fractions using a common number of slices
- Find a fraction of a fraction, like 1/2 of 3/4
- Share pizzas equally among friends to see division as a fraction
Levels
- Halves and quarters: Cut in 2 or 4
- Eighths and thirds: Cut in 3, 6, 8
- Same amount, new name: 2/4 = 4/8
- Mixed orders: The rest, 1 1/2
- Add and take away: 1/2 + 1/3
- Fractions of fractions: 1/2 of 3/4
How it works
- Six levels, from halves and quarters up to fractions of fractions, open as the child serves orders correctly.
- The child picks a topping, taps slices to put it on or take it off, and taps Serve!
- When an order is not right, a message explains what is off, such as too many slices of a topping or a cut that cannot show the fraction.
- Each order ticket has a speaker button for reading it aloud.
Best for: A good fit for grades 3 to 7 when a child is learning fractions and benefits from building them, not just choosing a number.
Tip for parents: Make a real pizza, sandwich or quesadilla and cut it into eighths. Ask for 3/8 with one topping and 1/4 with another, then see how much is left and how to say it.
Questions parents ask
Does the child choose how many slices to cut?
Sometimes. In some orders the ticket does not say how to cut the pizza, so the child picks the number of slices first. A cut that cannot show the fraction exactly gets a message suggesting a better one.
What happens if the pizza is wrong?
The message says what to fix, for example that you have put 3 of 8 slices on the plate when the order needs 2, and the child tries again. A correct pizza is celebrated with an Order up message.
Does it teach adding fractions with different denominators?
Level 5 asks for orders like 1/2 and 1/3 on a six slice pizza, so the child sees both fractions become sixths. It is a picture based first look at common denominators.
