Number Line

Read, place and compare numbers, fractions and decimals on a number line.

Numbers are easier to understand when you can see where they live, so Number Line asks children to see them as points on a line. They read the number a dot shows, find a missing number, tap the spot where a number belongs and compare which dot is greater. The line begins with whole numbers to 20, then grows to counting by tens and hundreds, fractions, mixed numbers, decimals and negatives.

Seeing numbers in order, with equal spaces between them, supports addition, subtraction and fractions. In the final level, children work out how far apart two numbers are, what the opposite of a number is and how far a dot sits from zero, which previews absolute value.

What children practice

Levels

  1. Level 1: Numbers to 20
  2. Level 2: Count by 1s, 2s and 5s
  3. Level 3: 10s, 100s, compare
  4. Level 4: Fractions
  5. Level 5: Mixed numbers, decimals
  6. Level 6: Negatives and distance

How it works

Best for: A good fit for kindergarten through grade 7, from early number sense to fractions, decimals and integers.

Tip for parents: Draw a number line on the sidewalk with chalk or a strip of tape and ask your child to stand on 7, then take three steps forward. Talk about what happens on the line when you add or subtract.

Questions parents ask

Does it include negative numbers and fractions?

Yes, Level 4 uses fractions, Level 5 adds mixed numbers and decimals, and Level 6 covers negative numbers, opposites and distance. Earlier levels stay with whole numbers, so younger children are not rushed.

How does the child place a dot?

In the tap rounds the prompt names a number, such as 3/4. The child taps the line, the dot snaps to the nearest tick, arrows move it one tick at a time, and Check confirms the answer.

Does it help with comparing numbers?

Yes, some rounds show two dots, A and B, and ask which is greater or lesser, or how far apart they are. Because the dots sit on one line, a bigger number is always farther to the right.
