Parallel Lines

Name angle pairs and find missing angles when parallel lines are cut by a transversal.

Few diagrams trip students up like two parallel lines crossed by a third line, and Parallel Lines focuses on exactly that. The student looks at a diagram with numbered or lettered angles and names the relationship between two of them, such as corresponding, alternate interior or vertical. Later they use those relationships to find unknown angles.

The last level puts algebra expressions on the angles, such as an angle marked x plus a number, and asks for the value of x. Each correct answer is explained with a reason, so students connect the name of a pair to what it says about the measures.

What children practice

Levels

  1. Level 1: Name four angle pairs
  2. Level 2: Name all six pairs
  3. Level 3: Find the angle
  4. Level 4: Find any angle
  5. Level 5: Solve for x

How it works

Best for: A good fit for grades 7 and 8 when a class is studying angle relationships, or for review before a geometry course.

Tip for parents: Ask your child to find parallel lines around the house, like train tracks in a book, a ruled page or a window, then draw a line across them and say which angles match each other.

Questions parents ask

Which angle pairs does the game cover?

Level 1 names corresponding, alternate interior, vertical and linear pair angles. Level 2 adds alternate exterior and same side interior angles. Together that makes six names for the relationships students need.

Does my child need to know algebra?

Only for Level 5. The first four levels use angle measures and the rules for equal or supplementary angles. Level 5 uses short equations built from angle expressions, so it also practices solving for x.

Are the diagrams always the same?

No, the transversal is drawn at different angles and leans left or right, and the marked angles change from question to question. That keeps children reading the picture instead of memorizing one.

Ready to try it?

Parallel Lines is free with a parent account. A parent adds a child profile, and the child's progress is saved.
