Transformations
Slide, flip, turn and resize shapes on a coordinate grid.
Transformations shows a solid shape and a dashed copy of it and asks which move turned one into the other. Children start with plain words for the moves: slide, flip and turn. Then the grid gets numbers, and they work with translations, reflections over an axis, rotations about the origin and dilations.
Many questions ask for the new coordinates of a corner after a described move, which connects geometry to the coordinate plane. The original and the image are drawn from the same numbers as the answer, so children can check a result against the picture and see why each coordinate changes.
What children practice
- Tell a slide, a flip and a turn apart from the picture
- Find the new coordinates of a point after a slide
- Reflect a shape over the x axis or the y axis
- Rotate points clockwise 90, 180 or 270 degrees about the origin
- Find the scale factor of a dilation about the origin
Levels
- Level 1: Slide, flip or turn
- Level 2: Slides
- Level 3: Reflections
- Level 4: Rotations
- Level 5: Dilations
How it works
- Five levels cover slides, flips and turns, then slides, reflections, rotations and dilations in turn.
- Each question is multiple choice, with the solid and dashed shapes drawn on a grid.
- A wrong answer says try again, and a right answer explains the move in words and in coordinates.
- The prompt has a speaker button so it can be read aloud.
Best for: A good fit for grades 4 to 8 when a class is studying transformations or when a child needs to link geometry with coordinates.
Tip for parents: Trace a simple shape on paper, then slide it, flip it over and turn it. Ask your child to name each move with the words slide, flip or turn.
Questions parents ask
Does the game use coordinates?
Yes, from Level 2 on. Children read the corners of shapes on a grid and give new coordinates after a move, such as the point (3, 2) after a slide or a reflection.
How are reflections different from rotations?
Level 3 flips shapes over the x axis or the y axis. Level 4 turns them clockwise about the origin by 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Mixed questions then ask which move was used.
Does it cover dilations?
Level 5 shows a shape that has grown or shrunk and asks for the scale factor, or for the coordinates of a corner after a dilation about the origin. It also mixes in the other three moves.

Transformations is free with a parent account. A parent adds a child profile, and the child's progress is saved.
